Abstract

Kombucha tea is a traditional beverage that is obtained from fermentation. It is believed that it could stabilize the metabolism and it often mentioned as the medicine for a variety diseases, for example liver inflammation disease (hepatitis). This study aimed to know the effect of Kombucha tea to liver damage in rats given solvent of CC14. This study used 44 female rats Wistar Strain aged 3 months, which are divided into Il groups randomly. Group I was a negative control that given aquadest only, group Il was a positive control given CC14 solvent 0.55 mg/kg body weight, group Ill was given CC14 solvent 0.55 mg/kg body weight + Kombucha tea 0.0 gr tea/L, group IV was given CC14 solvent 0.55 mg/kg body weight + Kombucha tea 10.0 gr tea/L, group V was given CC14 solvent 0.55 mg/kg body weight + Kombucha tea 20.0gr tea/L. Tea in groups Ill—V had been fermented for I week. Groups VI—XI were given those similar treatment like groups Ill—V, but with fermented tea for 2 weeks (groups VI—VIII), fermented tea for 3 weeks (groups IX—XI). All treatments were given orally and after 48 hours, those rats were anaesthetized with ether and then blood were collected for SGPT measurements while the livers were made for histopathological preparations. The results of this study indicated that Kombucha tea has protection effect at dosages of 10.0 gr tea/L with fermented tea for 1 and 2 weeks. It could be shown from the concentration ofSGPT and the degree of the liver cells histopathological damage. On group IV (SGPT 139.26 ± 15.74 P/L; 1.75 ± 0.50) and group vn (SGPT 132.67 ± 5.03 P/L; 1.50 ± 1.29) were lower than group 11 (SGPT 177.83 15.29 g/L,• 3.50 ± 0.58) atp<O.05.
