Abstract

Alcohol consumption by children and adolescents have become a very serious education problem in several areas in Indonesia such as in Papua (Kompas 17-11-2003). Habitual alcohol drinking among children and adolescents, especially in marginal economic status area, will certainly influence their behaviour and may result in serious social disturbances including criminal acts. The objective of the study is to determine factors that are related to the behaviour of children and adolescents in alcohol drinking. An analysis of secondary data of Basic Health Research (Riskesdas) 2007/2008 and National Social Survey (Susenas) 2007 which were cross-sectionally collected was conducted retrospectively through household and individual questionnaires on subjects age between 10 — 23 vears old who drank alcohol more than once during a month before the survey. The result of this study shows that a high percentage of children and adolescents (39, consumed traditional drink and whiskey/vodka (29.9%).More than 70% of them were older adolescents, 54, 1 0 0 were elementary educated or lower and 3.4% belong to children aged 10-11 yr. DKI Jakarta had the highest number of alcohol drinking children, yet at national level the greater part of them lived in villages (61.4%). Together with the existence of other alcohol drinking household menlbers, the level of• education is significantly related to the frequency ofalcohol clrinking.
