Abstract

Pesticides are used nowadays for the control of insects and vector deseases. Chlorinated pesticides are chemically stable and not easily decompose in nature. They are lipopbylio, so if they enter the ecocystem through the food chain, they will accumulated in fat tissues and liver. Chronic poisoning of the chlorinated pesticides could lead to diminished liver function, necrosis of the liver and adrenals or could even be teratogenic or careinogenic.

The object of study is to compare the concentration of pesticide residues found in cow's milk samples with the Acceptable Daily Intake established by WHO, USA or West Germany.

Samples were taken from farms selected at random from DKI Jakarta area. Identification and quantitation were carried out by Gas Chromatography with a Electron Capture Detector, SE 30 - OV 210 coloumn and N2 (Nitrogen) carrier gas.

In this study it was apparent that the pesticide residues found in the cow's milk samples were Lindan, Dieldrin, Thiodan and DDT. Some of the concentration of pesticide residues were higher than the Acceptable daily Intake established by WHO. However, the milk samples were still safe for consumption, because the calculated Maximum Residue Level of general population is higher than the Maximum Residue Level established by WHO, USA or West Germany.

In order to prevent long term effect of pesticide residues, control on the used of pesticides should be intensified, especially on DDT, so pesticide residues in the environment and agricultural products will decrease.
