Abstract

Low dietary supply of iodine is primary cause of iodine deficiency, typically in lack iodine environments. As effort of Iodine Deficiency Disorder (IDD) control and others, iodine mobilization increased availability of iodine in endemic area. This research objective was to investigate factor(s) related to iodine intake in region where have history as endemic area of IDD in condition of been controlled by IDD control program especially association between iodine intake with iodine content in local water. Research designed cross-sectional. Ninety three school children from region at western slope of Merapi Mountain participated in this research. Groundwater iodine contain and urinary iodine, excretory (UIE) measured by spectrophotometer method. Salt quality measured by iodine test solution, food consumption data gained by interview (recall). Groundwater iodine contain in western slope of Merapi Mountain was 2,0 ug/L. School children UIE in this region is 147,0 ug/L. There was association between school children UIE with iodine water content and also with animal sourced food consumption. Continuation of IDD control program was needed to prevent deficiency and excessive iodine nutrition in western slope of Merapi Mountain, Magelang.
