Abstract

Iodised salt had been recommended as one of the iodine deficiency control program in area with endemic goitre area for long time. In Indonesia, about 90% of salt consumed by household containt iodine. The nature of salt is that it is consumed by all age group of the population. Urinary iodine level (DIC) reflects the recent iodine consumption. Therefore, urinary iodine level is used to assess the success of iodised salt distribution program. Thyroglobulin (Tg), an indicator of thyroid function, is a thyroid specific glycoprotein precursor to thyroid hormone. Therefore, it is regarded sensitive to recent changes to iodine intake. The research question: whether or not 4 months intervention of iodised salt (20-30 ppm) has an effect on urinary iodine and thyroglobulin level. This study aimed to assess the effect of iodised salt intervention on iodine nutrition and thyroglobulin level among women of child hearing age. Subject of the study was 70 women of child bearing age (20-45 years old) live in endemic goitre areas i.e. sub-district of Tempuran (Magelang) and sub-district of Tembarak Temanggung), Central Java Province. Intervention of iodised salt (20-30 ppm KIO3) was given for 4 (four) months. The main data collection included casual urine sampie for urinary iodine level and blood sample for thyroglobulin level. The mean of iodine content -in sah used for intervention was 41.1 ppm. Total Goitre rate (TGR) was 31.5% in Tempuran and 42.1 % in Tembarak. Median value of thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) before and after intervention was 1.49 µU/mL, and 1.35 µU/mL respectively. Median value of Tg before and after intervention was 14.2 ng/ml and 15.8 ng/ml respectively. Median value of urinary iodine concentration (UIC) before and after intervention was 108 µg/L and 151 µg/L respectively. There was an improvement in iodine nutrition after the intervention. The thyroglobulin level was slightly increase but remain in normal range before and after intervention.
