Abstract

A study was conducted in two villages (Banpres and Tongoa) and one villages as addition (Bahagia) in Palolo sub district on February to November 2004 using cross sectional study. The objectives of this study to determine the risk factors of malaria transmission. In time of study, by the active and passive case detection, 5 villagers were found infected with malaria falciparum. The interviews with case in all of villages area strongly suggest that the most of malaria transmission took place in the villages (local transmission), and only in Tongoa village that suggest in the garden areas beside the local transmission. In the mosquito's survey, which was performed on July to November 2004, 7 species Anopheles were collected by means of human bait, animal bait and resting collections. The vector species that had been known to be the main malaria vector in Central Sulawesi. In fact, An. barbirostris accounted highest population in all of mosquitoes collected and was the most common species collected from human bait (indoor and outdoor). The peak activity of An. barbirostris was around to midnight indoors and outdoors at 23.00-03.00. Our surveys of immature stages near the study village revealed a large number of An. barbirostris larvae in flooded pools in the rice fields and irrigation canals in both dry and rainy season. The other Anopheles breeding places in this area are unused fish pools and small ground pools closed the river. The malaria technician in primary health center is good and dedicated, but there is inadequate microscopic diagnostic. He should receive additional training on malaria species identification.
