Abstract

Tuberculosis (TB) treatment needs a relatively long time at about six months and that the medications should be regularly taken. Because of the long duration, it is very often that tuberculosis patients drop out from the treatment for the reason in taking the medications TB patients are attended by Drugs Taking Supervisors (DTS), besides of their high motivation. This study aimed to determine the effective social supports enhancing TB patient?s motivation during treatment. The total respondents were 86 TB patient?s who at least having treatment within two months. The study was conducted in health centers in Sidoarjo, Lamongan, and Jombang Districts. The independent variable was social supports, either material or immaterial support from DTS to the TB patients. The supports could be emotional support, reward, information associated with Tuberculosis and the instruments, cash or things. The intermediate variable was knowledge, the important information on tuberculosis as cause, symptoms, transmission, prevention, medications, way of treatment, and side effects of the medications. Results showed that social supports influencing motivation and knowledge with the coefficients of g = 0.71 (T value = 5.82 > 1.96) and of g = 0.57 (T value = 3.51 > 1.96), respectively. Or there was a direct effect of social support but no direct effect of support on knowledge to the motivation for being cured. The strongest emotional support was in a contract way in which TB treatment in health centers. Also network support was important in a contract way in which TB treatment in health centers developing a network among TB patients, TB-patient families as DTS, and TB staffs or health center staffs who treating during six months. So it is important to enhance the roles of DTS, not only supervising but specifically to give social support to TB patients by training the supervisors using counseling principles. Besides, it should enhance the supervisors' knowledge or informative support of the DTS as to enhance the TB patient?s knowledge by providing handbook on tuberculosis disease for the supervisors.
