Abstract

Study on the behavior of malaria vectors (An. barborostris, An. subpictus and An. sundaicus) and its population density have been conducted in Adonara Island, East Flores Regency, East Nusa Tenggara. Result of intensive mosquito collections from 1996-1998 in two villages (Sagu and Baniona) in East Adonara subdistrict show that three species of Anopheles (An.sundaicus, An.subpictus, An.barbirostris) have been confirmed as malaria vector found in all areas. An.subpictus is found predominantly landing indoor and outdoor almost in all locations, expect in Pajinian villages, follows by An.sundaicus in Homa Villages and An.barbirostris in Sagu Villages. In Pajinian villages An.sundaicus is found predominantly and follows by An.subpictus. All the malaria vectors bite at night with the peak of biting occurs after midnight i.e, between 0.1-0.3 a.m. The average density of An. subpictus landing indoor and outdoor is 5,40 and 8,90 per/man/hour in Waiwadan, 10,62 and 17,79 per/man/hour in Sagu; 0,73 and 0,37 per/man/hour in Baniona. The average density of An.sundaicus in Pajinian is 0,37 per/man/hour landing indoor and 3,10 per/man/hour landing outdoor. The seasonal vector population density is an indication that all the of vector are found is high number around August (mid of the dry season) and December (early rainy season). During day time all the malaria vectors in Sagu village were found resting indoor, otherwise in Pajinian, Homa and Baniona villages on An.barbisrostris was found resting indoor. Daytime mosquitoes collection is not conducted in this study. An.subpictus and An.sundaicus breeds in brackish water (estuaries, lagoon, brackish standing water on the ground or stream) with the salinity of 0-21%, while An. barbirostris breeds in fresh water (stagnant water) along the river, swamp and ditch.
