In prospect of further effective management of congenital heart disease (CHD), as assessment of significance of the problem of CHD is needed. A survey has been conducted in a 6 month period in 1996 in maternity wards of 4 general hospital and 2 maternity hospital, to determine the prevalence of CHD in live newborn infant. This of is the first part of one year survey. The newborn infant was examined by a eradiartrician, maternity data recorded were age of both parents, history of previous pregnancy, and various factors suspected of possible etiology. If CHD were suspected, the infant will be further evaluated by the cardiologist. The total newborn infnts studied were 3069, 55,7%male, and 44,3% female 28 (9,1 per 1000) infants had CHD. Three infants had cyanotic CHD (10,7%), 1 with TGA, the other two with complec cyanotic CHD. Down's syndrome was found in with ASD,1 was infant of diabetic mother. Only one mother has baby at the age of more than 40 years, the infant hd CAVSD. One infant was born from father with CHD, not one from 4 mothers with CHD had infant with CHD . Atrial fibrillantion was found in one infant, no defect was found. From 28 CHD infants, 4 died (14,3%) during 5 days observation, one of these deaths (25%) was CHD-related. Maternity data showed thad mothers who did not consumpt vitamin B regularly during early pregnancy had 3 times risk of having CHD infant compared to mothers who dis (p<0,05). Smoking significantly posed as a risk factor for CHD, 37,5 times (p,0,05). Other risk factors were not statistically relted.
