Abstract

This study was an attempt to presenting the magnitude of maternal death risks in Indonesia based on the 1995 National Household Health Survey (NHHS). The 1995 NHHS was household-based sample survey covering all provinces in Indonesia. One of the objectives of the survey was to obtain information of cause of death in the community. Cause of death was defined by verbal autopsy technique and 10th International Classification of Diseases was used to classify cause of death including maternal caused of death. Problem of maternal death was indicated by the proportionate mortality rate, cause specific death rate (CSDR) and maternal mortality ratio (MMRatio). The first rate was obtained directly while CSDR and MMRatio were estimated indirectly. The NHHS identified a total of 3484 deaths, of which 299 cases were women at reproductive age (15-44 years). Twenty one percent of female deaths of reproductive age were classified as maternal deaths. High percentage of maternal deaths occurred among women aged 20-34 years (69,4 percent), with parity one to three (44,4 percent) and birth interval above two years (43,5 percent). About 53 percent of maternal death women who delivered their babies at home, and 30 percent of their deliveries were attended by traditional birth attendant. Birth complication including post-partum hemorrhage, obstructed labor and inertia uteri contributed more than 50 percent of the maternal deaths, eclampsia contributed 17,6 percent and diseases that complicated pregnancies contributed 9,5 percent. Risk of death from specific maternal causes was indicated by the following rates: birth complication specific death rate 27 per 100,000 women at reproductive age (WRA), eclampsia specific death rate 9 per 100,000 WRA, diseases that complicated pregnancies death rate 5 per 100,000 WRA, abortion 3 per 100.000 WRA. Maternal mortality ratio was estimated as 475 maternal deaths per 100,000 live births.
