Abstract

The United Nation Assembly in 2005, asked for the countries member to report the Iodine Deficiency Disorders (IDD) start in 2007, every 3 (three) years. In Central Java Province, Indonesia, IDD had been known for long time. IDD control consists of oral iodised oil distribution for women of child bearing age in severe endemic areas and iodisation of all salt for household consumption. Therefore, improvement of iodine status of population was expected. To measure Total Goiter Rate (TGR) and Urinary Iodine concentration (UIC) of population of Central Java Province. Three set of data were used for this paper: i) IDD Mapping Survey 1996, ii) IDD Evaluation Survey 2003, and Iodised Salt Survey, National Socio Economic Survey 1996/2003. Sample were school children, pregnant women and household. Data included: sampel of urine, salt concumed by household and palpation of thyroid gland. TGR of school children in 1996 was persisted 4.4% and in 2003 was 6.8%. Median value of UIC of pregnant women in 1996 was 165 mg/L and of school children in 2003 was 180 mg/L. Percentage of school children in category of insufficient iodine intake (UIC < 100 mg/L) was 11.4% while in category excessive (UIC >= 300 mg/L) was 17.1%. In 1996, 8.9% districs/cities with at least 90% of household consumed iodised salt or in category iodine sufficient, however, none of distric/city in 2003 was in category iodine sufficient. Correlation between TGR with UIC was negatif, in 1996: r= -0.112, confidence interval (-2.775; 1.437) and 2003: r=-0.196, confidence interval (-11.094; 3.078). Correlation between UIC with consumption of iodised salt in 1996 was positif: r=0.454, confidence interval (0.294; 1.078), but negatif in 2003: r=-0.116, confidence interval (-4.082; 2.057). This results showed the need of continuation of IDD control program in Central Java as well as regular monitoring to prevent excessive iodine nutrition.
