Abstract

Malaria remains a public health problem in Central Sulawesi, especially in rural areas. In 2001 there were 4 districts categorized as holoendemic and 1 district categorized as high endemic malaria. Those district with holoendemic malaria were Donggala with API of 11.23%0 ,Banggai 45.40%0, Buol 46.40%0 and Toli-toli 20.20%0 while one district with high endemic malaria was Banggai Kepulauan with API of 86.40%0. Entomological surveys were conducted by VCFS in collaboration with the Provincial and the Distrct of Donggala Health Offices. Mosquito collections were done by using landing collections method both outdoors and indoors, as well as in resting collections in cattle shelters. The results showed that there were 4 species of Anopheles were caught during the survey, i.e. Anopheles barbirostris, An. subpictus, An. parangensis and An. flavirostris. Those 4 species of anophelines were suspected as malaria vectors. All those 4 anophelines were found throughout the year but the population densities were very much influenced by season. The habitats of those 4 species of Anopheles spp were different from one species to the other, An parangensis and An. flavirostris were found in coastal areas adjacent to hills, An.subpictus was commonly found in coastal areas, while An. barbirostris was very widely distributed from coastal areas up to the hinterlands.
