Abstract

Hypertension is characterized by a diastolic reading above 90 mm/Hg, and a systolic above 140 mm/Hg, or both. There are two types of primary hypertension (essential or idiopathic) and secondary. Morbidity of primary hypertension is 89 % cases. Many factors are implicated in the develoment of primary, or essential hypertension. Some of the recognized risk factors include family history, environment, salt ingestion and sensitivity, race, hyperlipidema, smoking and diet. The account of secondary hypertension is only a small minority of pasient, but must be ruled out in all cases, as discovery and treatment of the cause will cure the hypertension.
