Abstract
Smoking is a public health problem because it linked to disease, disability and premature death. Smoking prevalence in Indonesia is increasing especially among man. The aim of this analysis is to study the problem of smoking behavior in Indonesia. The samples were population of ten-years-old and older from 27 provinces in Indonesia. This data had been considered by inflation factor, so the result is estimation to the whole population. The result showed that smoker prevalence was 27.7%. Prevalence for men was 54.5%. The prevalence for women was 1.2%. Ex-smoker prevalence only was 2.5% (5.3% for men and 0.3% for women). This smoking prevalence is inverted compared to education. For men, with elementary school education or lower it is about 74.8%. Primary high school 70.9%, secondary high school 61.5% and academy/university 44.2%. The smoking prevalence in rural areas was higher than in urban area. Smokers who started under 20 years old were increasing, most of the smokers (above 50%) consumed more than 10 pieces per day. Smokers of 10-14 years old consuming more than 10 pieces per day reached 30.5% while 2.6% smokers consumed more than 20 pieces per day.
