Abstract

Data of dental health has been collected in the National Household Health Survey (NHHS) 1995. In the survey medical doctors inspected on signs of Decayed (D), Missing (m) and Filled (F) teeth without using dental instruments. To avoid variation among the observers, guidelines and training were provided prior to the survey. In general, the result of NHHS 1995 can be used to define the magnitude of dental diseases in Indonesia. However, the results of observation carried out by medical doctors has to be compared with dentist to calibrate the findings. In 1998, a diagnostic test was done to compare the score of DMFT which were collected by medical doctors using the method of NHHS 1995 with the scored number observed by dentists using dental instruments. Intra observer correlation were as follows : Gamma correlation between two dentists while examining component of Missing/M and Filling/F was strong i.e 0.779 and 0.995, but the correlation was weak while examining the component of Decayed/D (0.475). Correlation between two doctors while inspecting component of D the correlation was weak (0.347). Inter observer correlation between dentist and doctor while observing component of M and F was also strong i.e 0.919 and 0.979, but while observing component of D the correlation was weak (0.310). Generally the result of the medical doctor’s observation was slightly underscored compared to the result of the dentists, except on the observation of object aged 12 years, which showed slightly over scored compared to the dentist. This was probably caused by erroneous observation of the permanent teeth at the age of 12, where there was a ‘mix dentition’ and the doctors could not see clearly the difference between primarily and permanent teeth.
