Abstract

A prospective study of Hepatitis B recombinant vaccine in infants was conducted in Bandung, West Java. In the study of a total of 186 pregnant women at the third trimester and 152 new born infants who were born from the mothers were involved in the study. Hepatitis B recombinant vaccine produced by PT. Bio Farma, Bandung was used in the immunization program and immunization was given by trained health officials as routine Hepatitis B immunization. The immunization schedule was at 0; 2 and 4-7 months of birth. The seromaker examination was HBsAg; anti-HBc and anti-HBs using ELISA kit diagnostic produced by ABBOTT Murex, United Kingdom. The result showed that HBsAg and HBeAg prevalence among pregnant women were 5.1% respectively, in addition 2.6% were anti HBc positive. The vertical infection among infants in Bandung was 5.9%. By routine Hepatitis B immunization, vertical transmission among infants were decreased from 7.2% down to 3.9%, according to HBsAg seromaker. In addition seroconversion rate of anti-HBs among infants in Bandung was only 60.6% in infant born from non carrier mothers. Therefore seroconvension rate was increased to 63.2% among infants who were born from both carrier and non carrier mothers.
