Abstract

Mental disease is one among the many problems that are predicted to increase as a side effect of the development process. Difficulties in coping with the changes caused by the development process were among the reasons that were assumed to be one of the sources of mental health problems. A total of 3.020 respondents who are 15 years and older with a minimum education at the Primary High School (Sekolah Menengah Pertama) level participated in the study by completing a Self Rating Questionnaire (RQ). The results revealed that village men in Jawa Bali aged 25-29 were those who felt the worst impact of the development process. It is assumed that the main reasons were associated with economic factors. There are not enough job opportunities in villages in Jawa Bali, while farming areas are shrinking every time, not to mention if there were failures in harvests. It is no wonder that this condition could create problems for married men. Women aged 15 -29 showed a quite high prevalence of mental health symptoms. It was assumed that the condition had something to do with Pre Menstrual Syndrome. The reason was that there was less proportion of married women aged 15-29 in outer Jawa Bali compared with those in Jawa Bali, whereas Pre Menstrual Syndrome is usually experienced by mature unmarried women. Other results revealed that there were higher mental disturbance symptom in Jawa Bali than those in outer Jawa Bali, especially for those aged above 30. It is assumed that the more intensive development process in Jawa Bali has an impact on the higher occurrence of mental disturbance symptoms. Mental health status of the society reflects the condition of that society. Therefore, effort in alleviating poor mental health status can not be separated from improving conditions beyond health aspects, such as economic condition, and status of women.
