Abstract

This article discusses the validity and application of verbal autopsy and International Classification of Diseases 10 (ICD-10) to mortality study respectively. In the country with disorganized and poor death registry, mortality survey using verbal autopsy technique is an alternative for collecting data on causes of deaths in the community. Diagnosis on causes of death is established from the conclusion of open interview by a medical doctor, with the family who know the signs and symptoms related to the disease history of the deceased. Several studies comparing the diagnosis between hospitals as a gold standard and verbal autopsy showed that validity was good at chapter and block levels, but fair in 3 or 4 character category. National Household Health Survey (NHHS/Survey Kesehatan Rumah Tangga) has been applying this technique since the first survey 1972. Glossary of some selected diseases was provided for medical doctor to improve the quality of verbal autopsy in 1995. The diagnoses was recorded in international death certificate and coded according to ICD-10.
