Abstract

Bacillus thuringiensis H-14 local strain which is cultivated on coconut water medium is known as effective bioinsecticide in controlling Anopheles sp., Aedes sp., and Culex sp. larvae. Community empowering process can not be separated from the learning process to improve the knowledge so that the public understands and accept an innovation as an effort to boost the active participation of community in malaria vector control. The purpose of this research is to enhance the knowledge, attitudes, and practise of the community about malaria as an effort to encourage community participation in controlling mosquito larvae malaria vector with Bacillus thuringiensis H-14 local strain cultivated in coconut water media. The result showed that there is increased knowledge of 18.6%, difference test between pre and post counseling shows significant results for p <0.05. The community attitude also showed an increase of 12.7% and difference test between pre and post counseling is also significant. Behavior and actions of the community especially in malaria vector control by using Bacillus thuringiensis H-14 local strain cultivated in coconut water media showed good improvement, 80% of respondents were willing to use and cultvating Bacillus thuringiensis H-14 local strain in coconut water media provided independently. But in the later application, the guidance of health workers is needed, considering the use of Bacillus thuringiensis H-14 local strain is only during drought, where pool formed from the river has a role in malaria mosquito vector habitat.
